I am having a personal water crisis this week so I decided to use this as an impetus to do a little water research. I am almost sorry I did!

I went looking for articles and /or studies about hydration as a health benefit and accidentally stumbled across studies about the carcinogenic properties of tap water!

This is a huge article from 1985 outlining how Tap water shows a direct increase in almost all types of cancer.

I then went digging for more recent information and honestly got lost in the science of it. But  what I didn’t find were any articles showing that the information was incorrect.

i switched to filtered or bottled water back in 2014 when my cancer reoccurred because My city had a sudden issue with the water treatment plants not doing their job and we decided my compromised immune system didn’t Ned that extra risk. Since I still do chemo every three weeks I have stuck with my extra clean, non-chlorinated water.

So, no big scholarly post on nutrition today but some gentle advice that maybe you should invest in a Brita or Pur just to be safe.

It is easy being green

In one of my little nutrition snippets that drop into my email everyday I was informed that arugula is amazing for high blood pressure. I have had HBP since my 20's of no known reason and been on medicine to control it since I was in my 30's. That's a lot of years of pills. I have tried many different things and nothing natural has gotten it to be at an acceptable level so I am always on the lookout for a new direction to go.

I always keep a bunch of mixed greens in my fridge and use them for salads, or I will throw them on a sandwich or a wrap or sometimes even in soups or on top of casseroles. Anything to add more fresh veggies into to my day, so I added a carton of just arugula as well.

Researching it shows me I should be eating it at every meal! Ounce for ounce an excellent source of a bunch of good stuff!

"Arugula is one of the leafy green vegetables that contain cleansing properties to counteract the poisoning effects of heavy metals in the system, particularly in the liver.2 It also has the ability to eradicate pesticides and herbicides from the body."

You know what that means right? An excellent cancer prevention food!

Clinical Trial – Nuts & Esophageal and Gastric Cancers

I am a big fan of nuts and seeds. Just a handful everyday of raw mixed nuts & seeds. Good fats, Good nutrients, and quite tasty !

Abstract

Background: Nut consumption has been associated with decreased risk of colorectal, endometrial, lung, and pancreatic cancers. Polyphenols, fiber, vitamins, and minerals in nuts may confer this observed protective effect. To our knowledge, no prospective study has evaluated the effect of nut consumption on esophageal and gastric cancers.

Objective: The objective was to evaluate the associations between nut and peanut butter consumption and the risk of esophageal and gastric cancers and their different subtypes.

Design: In this study we used data from the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study, which enrolled 566,407 persons who were 50–71 y old at baseline (1995–1996). The median follow-up time was 15.5 y. Intakes of nuts and peanut butter were assessed through the use of a validated food-frequency questionnaire. We used Cox proportional hazard models to estimate HRs and 95% CIs for esophageal and gastric cancers and their subtypes.

Results: We identified 966 incident cases of esophageal adenocarcinomas, 323 cases of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, 698 cases of gastric cardia adenocarcinoma, and 732 cases of gastric noncardia adenocarcinoma. Compared with those who did not consume nuts or peanut butter [lowest category of consumption (C0)], participants in the highest category of nut consumption (C3) had a lower risk of developing gastric noncardia adenocarcinoma [C3 compared with C0, HR: 0.73 (95% CI: 0.57, 0.94)]. This inverse association was also seen for peanut butter consumption [C3 compared with C0, HR: 0.75 (95% CI: 0.60, 0.94)]. We observed no significant associations between the highest and lowest intakes of nuts or peanut butter and the risk of gastric cardia adenocarcinoma, esophageal adenocarcinoma, or esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Conclusions: Among older American adults, both nut and peanut butter consumption were inversely associated with the risk of gastric noncardia adenocarcinoma. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT00340015.

Get a little Dirty!

It’s pretty easy to know what to eat in general. Eat things that grow in dirt. Do not eat things that were live beings or came from live beings.

I am going to become the record that skips on the one track. Protect yourself, eat better.

Right now we’re still talking in general. Big sweeping changes. Hopefully I will get to specifics.
