Don’t pray for my cold to get better

Okay – so here’s an actual serious question for someone.

If you believe in God shouldn’t the only request you ever make of him be: “Thy will be done”?

I know it sounds like maybe I’m picking a fight or something but it really is an honest question.

I hear people requesting prayers for their kids to pass a test or for that new job to come through, but if you believe that there is an almighty being ruling over your immortal soul shouldn’t you always trust that whatever happens is meant to happen and not ask him to change his mind?

  1. I am such a bad girl. I just prayed that God would make you feel better. 🙂

Anyway, I am going to think about this while Craig and I take a little car ride and get back to you.

You are a wonderful person and are very dear to me. I just wanted to say that. 🙂

    Talk to you later.

  2. People don’t answer this because it is a difficult question. Your answer will depend on your perception of God. Did he start it all and stands back and what is going to happen is just going to happen or does he control what happens? Do we have free will or not? Has God preordained how everything is going to happen.

God made a perfect place in Eden but God also gave Adam and Eve free will. He told them they could eat from all trees except the tree of life. Adam and Eve used their free will and disobeyed God and ate what they were not supposed to and God banned them from the perfect place. From that story we learn that God gave humans free will to make the choice of whether or not we obey his directions to us. His will is for us to do what is right and good according to his rules.

So if you have people not doing what is right and not following his rules that throws the system out of whack. God allows the good and bad to happen. The bad happens because we disobeyed God from the beginning.

Concerning asking God for silly stuff. Well, there are verses in the Bible that tell us to bring our concerns to God through prayer. Philippians 4:6-8New International Version (NIV)

6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

In other verses in the Bible it talks about how God cares for the birds and aren’t humans so much more precious than birds so God cares about us even more. Meaning he wants to know what concerns you. If I am concerned that you have a cold and that you are about to start treatment for your cancer and the cold might delay it, God wants to know that is something I am concerned about. And God may or may not answer my prayer and I don’t know why that is. I just don’t know. I do know he might work through some sort of supplements that you are taking. He might unexpectedly just make it a short cold. Or he may allow it to be the worst cold of your life. I don’t know why. I can’t say that Faith is logical.

What I don’t understand is why some people and I don’t know if you are of one of them get so irritated if someone says they are going to pray for you? To me it is just like putting good thoughts out there in the universe.

Truly, I don’t know. I don’t know why I just can’t not believe in God. I have heard a lot of good arguments for not believing. Maybe I just need it more than other people. Do I believe like some people believe? No. I do pray. I liken it to meditation which I believe is very helpful to people, too. I also liken it to good thoughts.

It is late and I am tired. I hope some of this makes sense. I hope you are sleeping well right now and wake up feeling wonderful!

    1. What a beautiful perfect answer Mary Beth! Thank you so much. Your explanation makes perfect sense.
I do not get upset when people say they will pray for me! I am always happy to accept any good will in any form. I do however read the blog of a woman who does get very upset, and I don’t really understand it either.

  3. I am glad it doesn’t bother you. There are times when people say I will pray for you in a jerky way such as I will pray for you to believe like I believe because that is the only possible way to believe. That is jerky but when people just want things to be better for you, that is nice and kind and how we supposed to be.

    Have a good day chickie!

One last thing, I have a feeling God is not going to help a kid get an A on a test when the kid has not done his part. If a kid has a hard time learning, a crappy teacher and has tried very hard, I’d like to think that God might jog his memory a little bit. At least I hope that if there is a God that is what he would be like.
